SEO has in recent years grown from an optional extra to a necessity for being found online. As a result, we all constantly receive those emails promising cheap and nasty SEO for an impossibly low-cost. Some will even take the offer to save a few dollars, and will end up worse off for a few simple reasons:

  1. Google Doesn’t Like It: With the roll-out ofPenguin 3.0, Google is coming down even harder on sites that have been using dodgy SEO techniques. Even if you’ve broken away from an SEO company and are doing things legitimately, Penguin will still pick up links that are still active and hit you with a massive penalty.
  2. You Can’t Communicate: If you’re a business owner in Melbourne and you outsource to an SEO company in the same city, you should be guaranteed contact during business hours. Any questions can be answered by simply picking up the phone. However, if you’ve outsourced to a company halfway across the world, you have all kinds of worries. Time zones won’t sync up, they may take days to respond to emails and even when you can get in contact, language barriers prevent you from getting anywhere.
  3. Poor Content: Aside from the use of terrible, black-hat techniques, outsourcing to a non-English-speaking country will inevitably mean that content is of a lower quality. Often spelling and grammar mistakes will run rampant, and will display a poor understanding of your product or service.
  4. No Long-Term Goals: There’s a reason that so many spam emails are sent out with too-good-to-be-true SEO promises. The companies behind them care far more for quantity than quality, and aren’t looking to establish long and fruitful business relationships. So long as they have your money, you could leave at any time and it won’t matter. There’s always some other company looking for cheap SEO to pick up the slack.

With the roll-out of Penguin 3.0, it’s never been more important to focus on good-quality SEO. Google is now stricter than ever with the sites it allows to reach the top spot, which is why an SEO company with a good track record, effective communication, long-term strategy and a deeper knowledge of search engines is always the better option.
