Here’s a stark truth: Black Hat SEO does exist, and people who deal in it can lie. In fact, even those who have good intentions but not enough experience can confuse fact with fiction, and SEO can be a tricky business with Google regularly changing their algorithms.

That said, here are just a few of the most common misconceptions, and how they can affect your business:

  1. Avoid Link Building: You’ll hear this one regularly, but the actual statement needs a bit of tweaking. Instead, it should be ‘avoid bad link building’.
The Google search engine loves both quality and unique content, so if your link building is both of these, it shouldn’t be a problem. Of course, spammy links will cost you in the long run, so focus on building them naturally.
  2. An Optimised Website is All You Need: …not quite.
An optimised website is the home base for your SEO operations, as it should be fully-optimised to draw client in. However, it’s simply not enough to sprinkle some keywords on your website and hope people stumble across it. Unless your service is incredibly niche, off-page SEO is what you’ll need to draw in a much wider audience and give your site the means to reach the first page.
  3. One Keyword is All You Need: Sure, the main focus of your business might be ‘coffee cups’…but here in Melbourne, just think of how many people are selling exactly the same thing.
Instead of focusing on the one keyword, it’s important to target a few to widen the scope of the campaign. If you offer a more niche service, that kind of thing is great to include. Remember, everyone wants to be number one, and yours probably won’t be the only business trying to get there. You have to find a way to stand out from the crowd, and a few alternate keywords will go a long way.
